The Inspire STEPS method

STEPS is not simply a way of writing a lesson. It is our method for adapting and differentiating activities, supporting inclusion, increasing challenge and making PE accessible to every child.

S

Space

Change the size, shape or zones of the playing area.

T

Task

Simplify or extend what the children are asked to do.

E

Equipment

Swap size, weight or type of equipment to suit ability.

P

People

Change group sizes, pairings, roles and support.

S

Success

Adjust what a successful attempt looks like.

Original activity

Children dribble a football around a 15m grid, keeping the ball close using both feet.

Adapted activity

Three smaller grids run at once so every child has a ball and more touches in a small hall.

STEPS — how the activity has been adapted

  • Space: three 8m grids instead of one.
  • Equipment: softer balls for less confident children.
  • People: talk partners for EAL pupils.

Built for real classrooms

Teachers describe the class in front of them and Inspire PE suggests only the changes that genuinely help. Please describe the class in general terms — there is no need to enter pupil names or other identifiable information.
